RFA, IPRC Kitabi and ARECO on Strengthening Collaboration for Forest Landscape Restoration in Rwanda

On July 15, 2025, a strategic dialogue was held at the Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA) headquarters in Huye District, bringing together RFA, the Integrated Polytechnic Regional College (IPRC) of Kitabi, and ARECO-RWANDA NZIZA. The purpose was to discuss priorities for forest landscape restoration, review current interventions, and explore opportunities for partnership.

The Director General of RFA, Dr. Concorde Nsengumuremyi, outlined the government’s ongoing restoration efforts through major projects such as TREPA and COMBIO in the Eastern Province. These initiatives focus on climate mitigation and adaptation using a community-based approach, with support from partners including IUCN, SIDA, and others. Additional projects like Congo Nile, Green Gicumbi, Mayaga, and Volcanoes Community Resilience were highlighted for their contributions to nature-based solutions and climate resilience.

IPRC Kitabi Principal, Mr. Richard Nasasira, emphasized the institution’s collaboration with ARECO in restoration initiatives, particularly through research and practical engagement. Ms. Dancilla Mukakamali, ARECO’s National Coordinator, shared insights into the organization’s work in protected and vulnerable ecosystems, including the Rugezi and Kamiranzovu wetlands in Burera District.

The dialogue concluded with two key outcomes: a joint field visit to a COMBIO project site will be organized to enhance shared learning, and a Memorandum of Understanding between RFA and ARECO will be signed to formalize future collaboration.

This session reaffirmed the importance of coordinated efforts among government institutions, academic bodies, and civil society to achieve lasting forest and ecosystem restoration in Rwanda.
