Evaluating Water Options for a Solar-Powered Irrigation Scheme in Butaro

On 15th April 2025, a field expedition was conducted in the Butaro Sector of Burera District to assess water availability and explore solutions for a solar-powered irrigation scheme to be implemented in the Biyove Village under the KungaBu project. The team included technicians from ECORDECO, who are responsible for the feasibility study, along with representatives from ARECO led by the NGO’s Vice-Chair, Mr. Balthazar Twagilimana, KungaBu staff, and local authorities from Burera District led by Executive Secretary Mr. James Karangwa, as well as a RAB technician and representatives of local farmer beneficiaries.

This expedition followed recommendations made during the recent steering committee meeting held from 3rd to 4th April and a subsequent technical meeting days later, on 8th April. The focus was to determine the most cost-effective and sustainable option for implementing the irrigation scheme. The technical work involved measuring water flow at potential extraction points and surveying possible canalization pathways, both essential for designing a system that meets the crop water requirements.

The data collected during the expedition is therefore intended to inform the feasibility study report, particularly it’s sections proposing design options for the solar irrigation system. Discussions regarding other important project matters also took place on site. ECORDECO experts have committed to completing and submitting the final feasibility report within a week, marking a significant step toward moving forward with the KungaBu project and achieving its targeted results.

Financed by the EU Rwanda Delegation and implemented jointly by Burera District and ARECO-RWANDA NZIZA, KungaBu (KUNGAHARA Burera) is a three-year project with a transformative mission: boosting food production in Kamiranzovu marshland and enhancing livelihoods for local communities.
